Job Description:
New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a highly motivated Scientist to join the Process Development Team in pursuit of optimizing upstream processes. Employing cutting edge technology and the expertise of NEB’s manufacturing science and technology (MSAT) resources, the Process Development Team is well-equipped to investigate upstream issues and develop novel solutions. As an integral member of the team, the successful candidate will focus on developing and optimizing fermentation/upstream processes for the manufacturing of NEB products.
Primary Responsibilities:
Conceive, plan, and execute technical projects in the areas of fermentation, microbiology and upstream processing.
Develop strategies to improve the overall reliability and productivity of fermentation processes at NEB.
Conduct self-driven, independent experimental research in close cooperation with other team members to meet established project and company goals.
Effectively organize, interpret, and present data to peers, cross functional teams, senior leadership, and colleagues. 
Work closely with Production Operations to determine and prioritize development and scale-up needs.
Conduct review of literature and make recommendations for application of new technologies to improve current processes.
Perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Advanced degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field required.
Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in fermentation development.
Proven experience in developing batch and fed-batch fermentation processes.
Familiarity with upstream instrumentation and software.
Strong working knowledge of E. coli
physiology and genetics.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects within a fast-paced environment.
Exceptional attention to detail and passion for problem-solving.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, as required, to meet development and maintenance scheduling needs.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
Training in DOE methods for experimental design and data analysis a plus.
Experience developing processes for use in cGMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environments a plus.
