The Research Associate will facilitate proteomics/global-metabolomics research in an analytical core facility within College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences by leading analytical method development and execution, high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry analyses, data interpretation, manuscript and proposal preparations, and upkeep of the instrumentation. Performs other duties as assigned.
40% - Essential - Develop & improve methods of sample processing & instrument analysis and data interpretation for proteomics or global metabolomics service projects. Maintain and operate high-resolution mass spectrometers. Design and perform whole proteome, post-translational analysis, enrichment-based, and/or biomarker quantitation experiments including sample preparation, instrument analysis, data interpretation. For metabolomics, perform computer assisted identification of unknown compounds from MS/MS experiments through silico fragmentation, and use online platforms and self-written script for data processing, develop mass spectral libraries utilizing accurate mass and fragmentation trees.
40% - Essential - Independently develop, execute and publish innovative and advanced proteomic/metabolomic experiments in the field of plant sciences (or on topics mutually agreed upon). Lead/contribute to research articles, proposals and presentations.
10% - Essential - Establish SOPs and maintains computer database of optimized protocols. Maintain the laboratory space and ensure the proper use of delicate equipment and instrumentation in the lab. The analysis procedure will be developed/revised independently as needed, which will require readings of scientific literature to adapt and optimize analytical procedures.
5% - Essential - Train other research staff, technicians, and/or students, as needed with analytical methods and instrumentation. This may include training the assistants in basic laboratory techniques involved in sample processing and instrument analysis.
5% - Essential - Ensure all tasks and responsibilities are carried out according to good laboratory practices and ethical standards. The QAQC should be maintained. Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) should be developed and verified prior to all analysis.
Education - Bachelor's Degree - in Biochemistry, or Chemistry or related scientific field.
Work Exp 4+ years of high-resolution mass spectrometry-based proteomics and/or metabolomics.
Extensive knowledge about biological systems and metabolic pathways. Experience in independently operating and maintaining high-resolution mass spectrometers.
Education - Doctoral / Professional Degree - in biology, biochemistry, or chemistry with a strong background in the application of high-resolution mass spectrometry in global-metabolomics/proteomic research.
Candidates with independent experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics (including global profiling, label/label-free quantitation, PTMs) and/or global-metabolomics (profiling, isotope flux analysis, biotrasformation).
Highly motivated in independently leading cutting-edge research in global-metabolomics or proteomics as attested by refereed publication. Prior experience in working in a core facility
