Job Description:
Energy is vital to our daily lives, and at the same time, climate change remains a serious concern. Within Shell’s Catalyst and Analytical Technology organization, we use human ingenuity, innovation, and advanced technology to develop catalytic solutions which unlock more and cleaner energy and chemical products for the future.
Where you fit in
Shell’s Catalyst and Analytical Technology organization has a global reach, with staff, lab facilities, and process installations in Houston, Amsterdam, Bangalore, Ghent, and Leuna. The organization develops and supports new products and processes, starting from initial discovery and extending to commercial deployment throughout the world. Staff within the organization collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders in established and new businesses in Shell, including Upstream Technology, Downstream Manufacturing, Integrated Gas, Shell Catalysts & Technologies, and New Energies.
What's the role?
The Process R&D Researcher is part of the Chemicals Catalyst Process R&D team focused on delivery of catalyst technology solutions, with core expertise in the development and application of models, data analytics, digital technologies, and experimental investigations. The successful candidate will be expected to lead projects that develop fit-for-purpose prediction models for new catalysts, integrate models into process simulations, deploy these tools for use by the technical service and business communities, and collaborate with R&D colleagues in the development and deployment of new catalyst products.
The person in this role will also design and oversee experimental programs and projects to support model data gathering and catalyst development in partnership with our laboratory and pilot plant staff to assure results are of high quality. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in lab and pilot scale catalyst testing and be able to assist the reactor operations team with proper design and monitoring of experimental reactors.
A keen commercial mindset is required, with the ability to apply models and data analysis to support commercial sales activities, guide commercial strategies, and demonstrate/deliver value to customers. The Researcher will provide key process and catalyst knowledge working with multi-functional teams to develop digital tools that support a highly valued and differentiated proposition to customers.
The Researcher will have exciting and rewarding opportunities to have a key role in commercial activities through collaboration and utilization of modelling/analytics expertise with multi-functional teams in Shell Catalysts & Technologies. Also, the researcher will be a key member of the global Shell Projects & Technology community of practitioners applying catalyst and process models.
The Process R&D Researcher supports Shell’s Powering Progress objectives in four key areas:
Catalyst and Process Models - By development of empirical, kinetic, and fundamental models for prediction and simulation of catalysts and catalytic processes.
Experimental Studies/Engineering Support to Experimental Operations - By designing and directing experimental programs to support the development of new catalyst products, understand the impacts of operating parameters on catalyst and process performance, and build/enhance experimental capabilities for the broader Chemicals Catalyst group.
Digital Tools and Solutions - By applying deep process and catalyst knowledge to conceive and collaboratively develop digital tools enabling advanced monitoring, operation, and control of catalytic processes.
Development and Commercialization of Products - By supporting R&D, Manufacturing, and Business partners in discovery/development of new products, catalyst geometry customization and optimization, defining market opportunities, and coordination of new product commercialization.
The scope of the Process R&D team includes chemical and environmental catalysts and process technology as well as emerging areas associated with the energy transition and novel chemical processes.
What we need from you –
Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, preferably PhD or equivalent experience.
Significant post-degree work experience with demonstrated competence in modeling chemical processes and catalyst behavior.
Excellent data analysis skills and capability to combine theory with large amounts of information from different sources to build models
Strong computational skills, including use of modeling software (e.g., Excel/VBA, SAS, Matlab or similar)
Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical results to a variety of stakeholders
Sound experimental skills particularly with innovative catalyst testing and design of experiments are highly desirable
Strong interest in working globally and across organizational boundaries.
Desire and ability to engage across the Shell R&D community and external partners on key projects to bring new specialized capabilities to the organization.
