Chemical Hygiene Officer/Lecturer

This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. The position is a twelve-month appointment.
This position will enhance the effectiveness of the Department of Chemistry by helping to ensure that all aspects of instruction, undergraduate research, and outreach service are conducted using current best practices of chemical hygiene and safety.
The successful candidate will have a master’s degree in chemistry or else experience beyond the baccalaureate level in the area of chemical hygiene best practices and a plan to earn a master’s degree while also working for our department. Candidates must also have the ability to work with a variety of constituencies in the department, across campus, and in the community, and a strong commitment to helping strengthen undergraduate science education by promoting a proactive chemical hygiene plan and teaching some classes as needed. Instructional responsibilities will depend on department needs and the candidate’s qualifications.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
As chemical hygiene officer for the department: coordinate, revise, implement chemical hygiene plan; maintain chemical inventory; manage this inventory in concert with current legal requirements concerning regulated substances; conduct annual safety training/information session for all student workers; ensure that staff training and facilities are adequate for materials ordered; determine the appropriate protective equipment required; ensure that it is available and in good working order; serve on the department safety committee; obtain/maintain certification as a registered chemical hygiene officer.
Other duties include:
Serve as assistant building administrator with department chair.
Order supplies as needed and complete regular transaction logs of these orders.
Maintenance and organization of inventory; inventory/coordinate chemical waste for disposal;
Some of these roles (including student safety training, inventory and chemical waste disposal) will be carried out in concert with the department’s lab coordinator
Teaching duties will include lectures and/or labs as needed in the department, assisting faculty and helping develop/test new teaching labs.

Chemical hygiene experience (desirable) consistent with that described by the National Registry of Certified Chemists.
Knowledge of federal, state, local, and institutional requirements related to the
safe use and control of chemical agents, fire safety codes, and life safety codes.
Required Education and/or Experience
A master’s degree in chemistry or else considerable experience beyond the baccalaureate level in the area of chemical hygiene best practices, and a plan to earn a masters degree in chemistry concurrently.
