Job Description:

Where you fit in

Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) is among Shell’s most material and most technology-intensive lines of business, anchored in the Integrated Gas business with a strong link to the Downstream business (differentiated synthetic hydrocarbon products). The energy transition opens new deployment opportunities for the technology, by introducing renewable energy into the process and delivering products with low or zero net carbon footprint at an impactful scale (“Anything-to-Liquids” or XTL).

The GTL-XTL department protects and grows the value of Shell’s GTL-XTL business by giving in depth process technical advice to operating assets, supporting new prospects, and driving the improvement of GTL integrated technology reliability, capital and energy efficiency, product value and its deployment in the energy transition. The work is done in collaboration with many delivery groups within Projects & Technologies and outside, including Integrated Gas, Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions and Group Strategy. The technology maturation comprises the building of fundamental technical understanding of current Shell and Third-Party technology, the identification/ co-creation / development / demonstration of value-adding novel technology options for short, medium, and longer term, the rigorous de-risking thereof from an integrated plant perspective, and the support towards deployment in operating GTL assets (SMDS and Pearl GTL) and new XTL projects. The department provides deep technical expertise to the operating GTL assets and to the front-end development of new XTL prospects, particularly in the strongly integrated technology areas of Heavy Paraffin Synthesis (HPS), Heavy Paraffin Conversion (Hydroprocessing) and GTL/XTL products. A focus area is the integrated operation of catalytic reactors and other unit operations. The work is data-driven, founded on (1) experiments in laboratory and demonstration facilities (2) data science for lab, demo, and commercial operations, and (3) multi-scale modelling from nanoscale to integrated plant scale and from nanosecond to multi-year scale.

What’s the role?

The GTL-XTL Researcher will report to the Team Lead GTL-XTL Liquid Processing and Products and is responsible for:

Leading R&D programs focused on Heavy Paraffin Conversion of Fischer-Tropsch wax.
Independent design of experimental program, evaluation of the experimental results and reporting in internal reports.
Responsible for safe execution of the experiments, together with the research assistants.
Collaborating with colleagues in Catalysis, Hydroprocessing, Analytical and Feed Supply and Crude Excellence.
Providing technical support to the GTL sales and marketing team of Pearl GTL.

What we need from you?

A PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering or related fields
Knowledgeable in independently defining and (overseeing) execution of R&D projects delivering quality results
Develops and fosters intimate working relations with scientists and technologists in areas relevant to GTL-XTL
Multi stakeholder management with good communication skills (verbal and written English) to effectively deliver technical messages to internal stakeholders and customers.
Awareness of Safe execution of experimental work
Awareness of stakeholders / customer base
Flexibility to work on a range of different topics
