What You Will Do
The Chemical Technician will work to synthesize and purify new and literature-based materials using an array of organic synthetic and chromatographic tools (HPLC, Flash, column, thin layer, etc.) as well as performing characterizations using standard analytical tools such as NMR, IR, GC/MS, LC/MS, UV/Vis, CD, and related techniques. Expertise or familiarity with microwave assisted chemistry, micro-reactor technologies, and polymer resin-based synthesis is desirable. The technician will establish procedures, processes, requirements, and specifications and apply these techniques to a growing customer base requiring site-specific isotope labeling. Duties will include equipment operation, calibration and maintenance, automation, and upgrading activities.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles with a background in synthetic organic chemistry
Demonstrated experience in data gathering methods and the use of chemical synthetic and analytical equipment
Demonstrated experience with the following analytical techniques: multinuclear NMR, chromatography, GC/MS, FTIR, LC/MS
Knowledge of the following: synthetic organic chemistry as it applies to stable isotope labeling, microwave assisted organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and material characterization
Experience with instrument design and fabrication; performing work in gloveboxes; and working with radioactive materials as desirable
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues and customers
Must work effectively as a member of a team composed of senior staff, junior staff, other technician, Postdoctoral researchers, and summer students
Desired Skills:
Advanced working knowledge and experience of organic synthesis
Knowledge of polymer synthesis as well as an understanding of manual and automated peptide and peptoid synthesis
Demonstrated supervision of projects and personnel
Education:Position typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and four-to-six years of related experience; however, an equivalent combination of education (e.g. Master’s degree) and/or experience is acceptable.

LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The successful applicant will join the Bioenergy and Biome Sciences Group (B-11) as part of the Biochemistry and Structural Biology and National Stable Isotope Teams. These teams combine site-specific isotope synthesis, on-demand synthesis of surrogates for a variety of threat agents, with research in understanding chemical and biological threat agents. Our primary customer base is focused on threat reduction, public health, and the environment. The synthetic organic chemistry facilities available are state-of-the-art.
