Job Description:

The SEAM organization integrates Safety, Environment & Asset Management activities, with a broad geographical footprint, that will support Shell’s business & assets around the world.

The vision of SEAM is to provide capability across the spectrum of Safety, Environment and Asset Management with:

Shaping the future ways of working through introducing to the business new technology and news way of working, including e.g., digital, Shell Business Office (SBO) and real-time, data-driven, end-to-end optimization and risk management, but also global programs like Human Performance Based Safety Philosophy.

Providing performance feedback driving disciplined execution to deliver reliable, predictable results.

Helping the businesses build their improvement plans and provide support to execute them.

Sustaining performance through strong core capabilities (internal, including SBO & contingent) through building expertise and a company-wide consistent approach.

The Projects & Technology Safety business is accountable for Group Safety Strategy, Process and Standards for the highest risk categories, high-risk events, Safety Support to Business, setting standards for high risks, and managing safety external partnerships. The purpose of the Projects & Technology Safety business is to enable & drive Safety (Goal Zero) in our global operations and will focus on preventing life changing injuries, covering the following areas: Process Safety, High Risk Road Transport, Contractor Safety, Learner Mindset/Human Performance and Safety Refresh Program, Operational Safety and Emergency Response. This business interfaces with the P&T Directorate and delivers support to Development & Projects, Wells & CP and Technology & GF.

Shell Technology Center Houston (STCH) is one of six Shell Technical Centers around the world. The only technology center in the Americas, STCH was built in 1974 and is home to approximately 400 laboratories managed by 13 respective businesses in P&T.

What’s the role?

The STCH Senior Process Safety Advisor reports to the STCH HSE Team Lead and serves as the senior Process Safety Advisor for the site.

The role requires a deep understanding of Process Technical Safety functional expertise, good oversight on the broad HSSE agenda for STCH to support P&T Experimental Operations (PTX) to deliver Commercial Technology supporting powering progress, an enterprise first drive towards Goal Zero, collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, and business partnering, with the key focus on:

Providing leadership to the process safety management at site for various scale of experiments, and internal/external pilot plants while adopting a pragmatic approach to manage the HSSE risk and support business in demonstrating risk to “As Low As Reasonably Practicable” or (ALARP).

Driving the implementation of the Hazards & Effects Management Process (HEMP) and consistent Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM) application and ALARP Demonstration.

Driving Process Safety Fundamentals in technology and lab user's space.

Lead risk assessment studies of new innovative technologies so that process safety inputs can be provided.

Ownership of site HSSE MS “Managing Risk” process and ownership of Site “Hazards and Effects Register”, including the required templates for risk assessments that various Line of Businesses follow. Align the approaches for risk management with other technology centers.

Engaging the contractors and front-line staffs through toolbox talks, trainings and sharing learnings.

Leading High Value Learning publication as appropriate from incident investigations of significance and sharing across other Technology Centers specifically related to Process Safety.

Input to the annual HSSE & SP CF Management Review on Process Safety.

Leading incident investigations on Process Safety.

Conduct Walk & Talks, audits, and inspections for assurance of key control elements as per HSSE control framework.

Collaborate as part of a global team of process safety advisors delivering support to global Shell Tech Centers.

What we need from you:

A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Safety Engineering or equivalent, (Master’s Degree is preferred) with at least ten (10) years’ experience in technical/process safety engineering.

Specific skills and experiences must include:

Experience in an operating asset is preferred.

Experience in HSSE cultural improvement initiatives at an asset preferred.

Good communication, presentation, influencing and business writing skills.

Coaching & training skills to effectively support others.

A genuine passion for safety.

The position requires a confident HSE Team member with practical S&E experience, willing to intervene, coach, and support people at all levels of the organization including senior Leadership Team members.

Strong interpersonal skills, ability to challenge and ability to build internal and external relationships based on trust and to integrate across multiple functions.

Knowledge level in “Risk Management” with knowledge/experience of:

Demonstration and Documentation of ALARP

Conducting HAZID Exercise and Carrying out HEMP

Process Safety Fundamentals

Process Safety Reviews (HAZOP, DSR etc.)

Pre-Start-up Safety reviews (PSSR)

Identification & implementation of critical equipment and critical activities, Process safety incident investigation, assessment, and categorization

Change management from Process Safety perspective.

Knowledge level in “Safeguarding” with demonstrated knowledge/experience in:

Safeguarding- hardware design, blowdowns, drains

Hazardous area classification

Lock Out Tag Out

Knowledge level in: “Technical Safety Fundamentals” with exposure to design requirements and compliance elements, operational safety, review of design documents and management of changes.

Knowledge Level in:

QRA

FRED PEM

Incident Investigation and learning using causal methodology (level 1 and 2), and HSSE & SP in Projects

Basic trainings: TSE 100,101; HEMP 100/101; LOPA
