Provides coverage
of the Residential Unit during the day & evening/overnight shifts.  Responsible for all interventions on the unit
during absence of counseling staff. 
Performs basic duties to provide for care, comfort, and safety of
clients.  Provides some basic nursing
responsibilities such as taking vital signs, documenting client activities
during the shift, supervising medications and treatments, simple first aide and
making regular checks regarding the whereabouts and safety of clients.  Works with adolescents, adults, and geriatric
clients.

 

Uses
and discloses patient protected health information:  1) 
Only as it applies to job functions, 2)  in amounts minimally necessary for intended
purpose, and 3)  in a confidential
manner.

 Hours: Night shift (6pm-6am) and some days (6 am to 6 pm). 24 hours or more per week, 2 or more 12 hour shifts a week, every other weekend or every Sunday required.

Principal Duties and
Responsibilities

 

1.* Establishes
and maintains effective therapeutic relationships with clients and/or families
and significant others who are experiencing a variety of complex substance
abuse problems and r/t issues.

 

2.* Responsible
for residential unit during evening, overnight, and weekend hours.  Documents regular client activities and any
otherwise unusual circumstances that occur during their shift.  Responsible to provide a “shift change”
verbal and computer report to incoming staff so that critical occurrences may
be dealt with during the next day or following shift.

 

3.* Provides supervision of the clients and
moves around and surveys the unit to locate all clients and update incoming
staff.

 

4.* Prepares
admission packets, takes inventory, and prepares information to be sent out to
clients, families, and/or referral sources as directed by the
multi-disciplinary team.  Performs
certain amount of cleaning duties. 
Periodically responsible to explain admission information to clients
recently admitted; explaining client’s rights, rules and guidelines, program
operations, tour of the facility, and other pertinent orientation
information.  Documents orientation
information.  Instructs clients and
family members on fire procedures and emergency exits and tornado procedures.

 

5.* Takes client
vital signs, checks client height/weight, supervises medication/treatments and
basic first aid, checks client rooms and general facility for cleanliness, and
generally monitors clients to insure they are following specified treatment
plans.

 

6.* Assists
primary counselors in evaluating the extent of substance abuse and/or
dependency of the client, which involves basic listening and reporting skills
in order to document and relay information gained to the multi-disciplinary
team.

 

7.         Demonstrates,
on occasion, reflective listening skills in individual, family, and group
settings as they apply to primary substance abuse issues; performing these
tasks only as assigned by primary counselor, the Program Manager, and/or the
Director.

 

8. Provides,
on occasion, group directed activities to both clients and their families in
areas specific to substance abuse; performing these tasks only as assigned by
primary counselors, the Program Manager, and/or the Director.

 

9. Supervises
twice daily client meetings and documents activities.  Assists the clients in problem solving,
setting up client chore list, and assists the client leader and co-leader.

 

10. Plans
recreational activities for clients, supervises these activities, provides
monthly calendar of recreational activities.

Position
Qualifications

 

Education

Ability to read, write and type in order to record
client information on charts and to interpret type and level of client care
required; and ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations in order to
take and record vital signs as normally acquired through completion of high
school.    

 

Certification/Licensure

BLS required upon
date of hire or transfer.  Required to
obtain First Aid Certification within 6 months and Medication Aide
Certification within 6 months in order to show competency in supervision of
client’s medications.

 

Experience

Approximately one month experience in order to gain
knowledge of client care methods, policies and procedures, techniques and
schedules.  Requires the basic knowledge
of substance abuse related issues and understanding of the disease process and
client care in the field of alcoholism/chemical dependency.  Familiarity and understanding of Alcoholics
Anonymous, Al-Anon, and other 12 Step Recovery Programs.

 

Skills

Interpersonal skills necessary to be able to confront
clients when engaging in inappropriate behavior, provide recognition of
appropriate client behavior, re-directing inappropriate client behavior and so
forth. Evidence of active involvement in a recovery program for those employees
who have experienced past personal problems with substance abuse.

 

Analytical ability required to be able to evaluate
client behavior and determine appropriate reaction, decide which behavior
should be communicated to the multi-disciplinary team and make decisions
regarding which vital signs require an immediate response.

 

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail
for up to 20% of work time when taking vital signs, documenting on the client
record, and interpreting specified treatment plans.
