About the role:
Exciting opportunity to join Takeda’s active and growing Environmental Sustainability and Risk Team as Takeda develops and implements effective strategies to minimize its environmental footprint while supporting its mission to develop and deliver life-saving medications to patients
Newly-created and highly visible role responsible for supporting the development and implementation of Takeda’s strategy to protect Takeda’s reputation, reduce Company environmental impacts, and achieve net-zero GHG emissions in our operations before 2035
Develops/implements environmental and sustainability programs, standards and tools to reduce environmental impacts, promote compliance with Company and regulatory requirements, identify and mitigate environmental risk, and improve environmental performance.
Leads/participates with cross-functional internal teams and external stakeholders to execute on the project and program implementation - particularly focused on resource conservation and minimization of life cycle environmental impacts from our operations
How you will contribute:
Develops programs and processes to drive environmental and sustainability performance and minimize environmental risk. Collaborates with stakeholders to execute on project and program implementation. Completes benchmarking and assesses emerging sustainability and regulatory developments to support Takeda in compliance and sustainability matters
- Provides on-site and remote technical support for environmental compliance and risk matters/issues (e.g., environmental pSIF/SIF root causes analyses and CAPAs, emergency response plans, regulatory compliance, including environmental permit compliance, remediation plans, wastewater discharge, and air emissions treatment design & operation, standards, and requirements implementation, etc.) to regional/OpU leads, sites and other stakeholders.
Identifies potential organizational environmental opportunities and risks, and recommends and develops mitigation programs/processes. Supports development and implementation of environmental technical standards and training for effective implementation. Supports sites with Environmental Aspects and Impacts assessments. Support EHS due diligence assessments for real property transactions and waste vendors.
Collaborates with stakeholders on environmental sustainability risk and compliance matters (e.g., developing standards, position papers, technical guidance, capital project assessments, etc.)
environmental and sustainability performance reporting for internal & external communications (e.g., ESG Hub, Takeda’s Annual Integrated Report, CDP, DJSI, etc.)
employee engagement activities such as green teams and sustainability day events.
Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise
Deep knowledge of environmental sustainability topics such as GHG protocols, renewable and low carbon energy markets/technologies, water stewardship, waste management, product stewardship, life cycle analysis, biodiversity, circular economy, etc. with the demonstrated ability to translate that knowledge into effective programs/initiatives
Knowledge of, and experience with, sustainability reporting standards and ratings (e.g., GRI, CDP, DJSI, TCFD, TNFD, etc.)
Experience navigating complex environmental matters (e.g., interpreting legal and regulatory requirements, permitting, developing standards, identifying/sharing best practices, etc.) with the ability to clearly communicate with stakeholders
Experience supporting and collaborating with multiple international company locations, ability to communicate with operating sites, and technical experience supporting the management of environmental issues and training (e.g., wastewater treatment and air pollution control technologies, oil and chemical spill response, regulatory compliance, etc.)
Ability to effectively lead/influence/motivate cross-functional teams and interact with stakeholders at all levels of the Company to achieve environmental goals
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to provide training support
Track record of ethical behavior
Knowledge and experience driving resource conservation and waste reduction efforts
Decision-making and Autonomy
Determines environmental program strategies and implementation with limited oversight
Confidence to propose initiatives and make decisions to ensure compliance with environmental laws/regulations and protect the company's reputation
Ability to work independently and with limited guidance
Self-starting with proven, strong analytical skills
Ability to provide environmental recommendations to business partners based on experience and regulatory knowledge
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.
Ability to actively listen, build/maintain effective working relationships with internal/external colleagues/resources, and resolve conflict.
Support Global Head of Environmental Compliance and Risk - to keep knowledge of sustainability trends and current regulatory environmental requirements and have a process in place to monitor new sustainability leadership expectations and regulatory requirements. Must remain current on the latest innovations in environmental management, proposing new programs and tools
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of environmental sustainability topics, technologies, and best practices (e.g., carbon neutrality, water stewardship, waste minimization, biodiversity, etc.
Ability to identify/recommend opportunities for innovation, technology improvement, and the incorporation of AI/machine learning to improve programs, methods, and tools
Ability to prioritize competing activities to ensure accomplishment of goals and also to react immediately to unplanned issues requiring response (e.g., env. releases or compliance issues)
Ability to work independently, meet requirements and deadlines from multiple stakeholders and execute tasks strategically in a fast-paced environment
What you bring to Takeda:
A Bachelor's of Science degree in Environmental, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering is required (other engineering or science-related degrees will be considered on a case-by-case basis).
the position requires 5 years of experience in a facility or corporate experience in this field and 2 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and/or chemical industries in manufacturing/R&D environments.
Solid understanding of environmental regulations and management systems. Multi-lingual capability (English plus at least one other language) is considered a plus.

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:
Work in a controlled environment requiring special gowning and wearing protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. This may include additional hearing protection for loud areas.
Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.
Work in a cold, wet environment.
Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.
Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.
