Ecolab is searching for an experienced professional Principal Mechanical Engineer

for future opportunities within our Nalco Water Research and Development division in Naperville, IL.

Position Summary

Responsible for the system-level design and development of Nalco Water’s standard Feed Dose and Control equipment product. Collaborates with cross-functional team from Marketing, R&D, Regulatory Affair and Technical and Field Service to thoroughly understand the Voice of Customer (VOC) and the Voice of Business (VOB) and define the product requirement and testing protocols. Owns the mechanical, thermal, fluid sub-system as well as the integrated system design while ensuring that product is designed for optimized end-user experience and total delivered cost. Manages the third party design.

This position is the key engineering role using solid understanding of the theory and practice of System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Project Management to interface with diverse functions inside and outside Ecolab to achieve alignment and bring the differentiated equipment offerings to the market.

Primary Responsibilities

Execute the full product development cycle from definition, design, prototyping, testing to serial production.

Develop product requirement and robust testing protocols that derive from the product requirement based on the identified Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and VOC/ VOB to ensure that product will meet or exceed the intended functional, quality and cost target.

Manage, devise and execute the verification and validation test on product safety, functionality, operability, serviceability and reliability. Develop and approve the product test document.

Conduct iterative FMEA, Design Review, Safety Review and Risk Analysis with representation from appropriate cross-functional areas. Identify and address the corrective and preventative action items and document the solutions.

In collaboration with Marketing and R&D, conduct technical trials and their ensuing design enhancement.

Act as the lead designer on product’s physical structure, layout, heat exchanging, cooling, ventilation, rotating devices, chemical mixing and storage vessel, and materials transfer devices.

Support product sustaining effort and provide the technical and design enhancement solutions to address the product field performance, quality, maintenance and procurement challenges.

Manage the third party design from evaluating and selecting appropriate design partners, conducting design review, to design approval and final signing-off.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other related field with at least 5 years of electromechanical product design experience.

Applied Knowledge in the following disciplines: Physics, Solid Mechanic, Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Science, and Materials Properties and Selection.

Proficient in using at least one of the 3D CAD modeling tools- Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks and Pro E.

Experienced in sheet metal and plastic modeling – materials and process specification. Strong knowledge and application experience on Design for Manufacturability (DFM).

P referred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Mechanical or the related engineering

Demonstrated success on project management on electromechanical product design while interfacing with cross-functional and interdisciplinary technical areas.

Good organizational, interpersonal communication skills. Capable to collaborate across functions and can effectively influence decision making.

Must be able to make independent decision in his/her expertise areas.

Design and manufacturing experience in Medical equipment, Chemical Processing or water treatment industry, especially in the Feed Dose and Control area.

Product development leading experience.
