Position Overview
Serves as technical leader and subject matter expert for material selection, development, characterization, industry standards / requirements, material compound scale up and product manufacturing. The AMG Material Scientist / Chemist is the primary materials contact and single point of accountability for global organizational teams (includes marketing, engineering, and manufacturing). The focus of this position is for the subject matter expert to create and commercialize technically differentiated solutions, advance our technical expertise via sound design validation techniques, and ensure material regulatory requirements are met.
Responsibilities
Initiates and coordinates material research and development activities with emphasis on medical, water, automotive, industrial and specialty vertical markets to create new products or enhance existing products.
Converts customer needs to material requirements and meets them by formulating new materials or modifying existing formulations.
Designs experiments and test plans to create derivative and breakthrough materials.
Analyzes test results, interprets results, and provides recommendations to the team concerning but not limited to material selection, test design, compounding guidelines, molding guidelines, product testing, regulatory needs, and vendor selection.
Manages all material related activities assigned in medical, water, automotive, industrial and specialty vertical markets and supports customer requests for any material related issues.
Researches and develops rubber formulations and modification technologies, designs and conducts experiments, evaluates test results, to ensure products meet requirements.
Provides manufacturing support for compounding and molding.
Keeps current with industry relevant regulatory needs and collaborates with external third-party services supporting management of all regulatory requirements.
Communicates with vendors and customers to resolve material related technical issues.
Provides technical support to other company departments and utilizes sound project management tools.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, material engineering, biochemical engineering, or related fields, with 5 years relevant experience. Alternatively, a master’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience.
Must have background in elastomers/rubber compound development or advanced material development in a related technical field
Proficiency in the statistical design and analysis of experimental data
Strong problem solving, data analysis, technical documentation, and communication skills with mindfulness
Ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Additional Preferred Qualifications
MS or PhD degree
Familiarity with elastomers, fillers, and/or reinforced composites
In-depth knowledge in rubber chemistry, thermoplastics, physics, performance, and testing
Experience in elastomeric formulation for dynamic applications
Experience in understanding structure/property relationships in materials
